Summertime, No Wait. . .Procrastination?

It’s been too long my friends. I had every intention of blogging more during the summer, working on more projects during the summer, ya, ya, ya. (Isn’t that a Beatles song?) It’s the same old story. Everyone knows it. The summer is flying by! Where has the time gone? I haven’t gotten nearly as much done as I intended. I’m so behind. . . whatever! I’m tired of it. It occurs to me this morning, that time is not moving any faster or any slower than it has since the beginning of . . . well time. . . . It’s not time’s fault that I am unproductive and it’s not time, who has given me an unrealistic idea of what it means to be productive.

Don’t get me wrong. I am a pathetic procrastinator. Wait, no. . . that implies I’m bad at procrastinating. The exact opposite is true. I’m going to assume you know what I’m getting at. Ya’ll are intelligent. (I apologize, my southern is showing. My husband would appreciate it. I can see him smiling now, the way he smiles when I correct myself after saying soda instead of pop. He gleeful says, “it’s happening” and I glare.) I am not excusing laziness, and there are instances, where I find myself tending towards that lifestyle. However, I wonder if, more often, I am simply confusing procrastination with laziness. They are not the same thing. Laziness is to put aside and ignore the things we are responsible for. Procrastination is to prioritize the things we are responsible for differently than others might.

To be lazy is to be unproductive. I feel unproductive because the voice in my head lies and tells me my procrastination is laziness. And I’m sure there are people out there that would agree. For some, procrastination is a sin. If you feel strongly enough about the topic please let me know. I love a good conversation about differing opinions. However, I need more practice having the conversation with someone who actually holds the differing opinion, as opposed to just discussing the differing opinion with someone who shares my opinion.

I believe the point, I am trying to get at is, I am more productive than I give myself credit for. Because I am not as lazy as I think I am. And I think many people are in this boat. You aren’t unproductive, you’re trying to do too many things. You aren’t being lazy, you are prioritizing differently. Stop looking at all the stuff you FEEL like you have to do, and think about all the stuff you have gotten done. Even IF it was prioritized differently than you thought it was going to be. Honestly, taking a bit of time to enjoy the things I’ve accomplished often makes me want to accomplish more, instead of wallowing in all the things I think I have to do, but dread.

Yes, sometimes you have to do the things you don’t want to. (I’m not saying everything in life is optional. I mean yes, technically it is. But . . . nevermind, we’re not going into this right now.) But, lands it’s so much easier when you aren’t kicking yourself the whole time for not doing it sooner. Stop saying there’s never enough time. God created time, I’m going to go out on a limb and say there’s exactly as much time as He wants us to have, which means by default there’s enough. You aren’t unproductive just because you’ve given yourself, or let someone else give you a list of expectations that you cannot and should not accomplish in a summer when God has given you a lifetime. . . .or at the very least till Christmas.

So, I leave you with a question, I believe the only question. Was this blog post productive? Hint, I was going to write about the fun evening I spent canoeing with my husband. I got distracted. Do what you will with this information.
