What is a Wedding Detail Photo?

Details, details! Don’t bother me with details. . . . said no one ever about a wedding day. Your wedding day is full of details, and chances are you started thinking about them shortly after the proposal. Date, time, venue. . . the list goes on. However, once you’ve gotten all those details figured out and your wedding day draws near, you may not know what your photographer is referring to, when you see your wedding day timeline and right near the beginning you see “Detail Photos”

What details? Which details? Well the answer is, your details. All of the little bits and pieces that you will be wearing or are perhaps gifting to your significant other. I have photographed a number of weddings and there are no rules. It’s whatever is special or meaningful to you. This usually includes, but is not limited to your rings, shoes, jewelry,

cologne or perfume, wedding flowers, letters, family heirlooms, ties, cuff links, watches, fun socks, and the invitation suite.

It depends on your photographer, but in general, if this is a portion of the day you want prioritized, expect roughly an hour to be set aside for these images. Typically they can be done while the bride and her girls get their hair and make-up finished. That way we’ll get a few candids of you and your girls at the same time.

To keep things simple I recommend having both the Bride and Groom’s details assembled prior, in the Bridal suite. Once details are finished the Groom’s items can be returned to him for the “getting ready” photos. And while it can take some coordinating with your florist, if details are happening first thing, your photographer will appreciate having flowers to include, and you will to! They add so much color and texture to the images. But, often the flowers aren’t scheduled to be delivered that early. Don’t stress about it, but talk to your florist and coordinator to get the flowers on site in time. Typically it’s not difficult, it simply needs to be communicated ahead of time.

Don’t worry, if you don’t feel like you have a ton of details. Above all else this is your wedding day, and as photographers our number one priority is capturing your story. We will get beautiful images. And I am a firm believer in capturing authentic images. Yes, there will be some directing and arranging to take advantage of the best light or to bring out the emotion of the day. But, not at the cost of taking away from you being in and enjoying every moment. So, assemble your details, chat with your photographer if you have questions and soak in your gorgeous day!
